Have you ever been shot?

Just curious, for those who are here who have either been shot or shot at, what was it like? Did you have a gun with you? Was it a gun battle or just one or two shots?

Personally I've never experienced either, and I honestly wonder how I would react to shots fired at me. I've have (minimal) training and am probably a better shot than most people around me, but still I wonder how and if I would react appropriately if that time ever came for me.

Great question! Be sure to include calibre, range and damage report.

I look forward to some very entertaining answers from this thread!

Some here might resent this question a tad...

Not that it's a bad question, your free to say and ask what you will.

However some might take a horrifying personal expericnce as something
more than an open topic on a forum or as "entertainment".

There are any number of sources available bolth on the internet and in print
that can give you a wealth of info.

Whats it feel like to be shot at?...heres my answer in a scientific and detailed
play by play break down just for your personal knowlege and "entertainment".

It fu*ing sucks...avoid it if you can.

I got shot in the back with a bb when I was a kid.

I was enough to make me realize I definitely didn't want to be shot by anything more powerful.

20 gauge pellets (size 7) during rabbit season last year. Came up off of frozen ground, hit me in the thigh...... stung like a Mutha!!

Knee jerk reaction is to level your own weapon, but since it was my dad doing the shooting, I just did my damndest to make myself recognizable.

I hurts, more than a little.

ONE a round from one of our planes.

One a small caliber from a LGMF.

In retrospect--it hurts a whole lot.

First wound is from brave, second is from stupid.

From the more extreme end of the spectrum.

Ambush in Iraq, probably the worst form of gunfire you can be on the recieveing end of.

Getting ready to set up for sleep that night, we were pulling into our final spot. Just as we had pulled in, all hell broke loose. Gunfire and RPGs, no idea where anyone is at since it's dark and it gets pitch black over there since there's no light sources. So you look for the muzzle blast and shoot at that till it stops. Then the bombing runs and artillery started hitting...

The andreneline rush, and the panic is like no other. Training completely takes over, once it all said and done you look back and realize just how much on autopilot you were.

I'm just glad their aim sucks over there... no losses in my battalion.

Just missed with a 12 ga slug at close range during a holdup. Burned hair and the collar of my suit jacket. Not my favorite event to recall.

Yeppers......the First time I took my MG-42 out to shoot, I made the big mistake of gripping the forestock underneath firing in the prone position - that where the HOT brass ejects !!!

Re: Have you ever been shot?

Nope. Well, my rock climbing buddy and I were bouldering one day, a number of years ago, and the bouldering area was in the woods next to a low-rent (that means in da 'hood) apartment complex (Boulder Park, if anyone in the Atlanta area knows it from about 15 years ago, before it improved). Next thing we knew, bullets were zinging off the rocks and trees around us. We never saw the shooter and don't think he was purposely shooting at us; probably just some fool shooting off into the woods. You never knew in that area, though. We ducked under some overhanging rock on the opposite side of the rock from the gunfire and waited it out, waited another 20 minutes, then returned to our bouldering.

Oh yeah, and an old guy at the range didn't hear the hold fire and started shooting downrange while two of us were walking back from changing targets. He got off about 3 rifle shots before everyone else stopped him.

I found one of my dad's .22 shell's when my brother and I were 6&7. The rest of my family were outside. While I was showing it to my brother, dad called us, and I panicked and set it in the stove and we went outside. As soon as I could I came back in to hide it, and when I walked in the front door it went off. Hit me about 4 inches NE of my belly button. The blood was gushing out a little hole so I put my finger over it. My dad told me the doctor couldn't get it out and just sewed me up. I went around for years believing that. I still have the scar. I learned to respect guns and ammo.

Re: Have you ever been shot?

Getting hit with Sim Munition hurts pretty damn bad, and almost always breaks the skin. It can also go through layers of clothing, and burn inot the skin.

Based on that I would say actual bullets would hurt much worse. I personally know somone who was shot right between the tibia and fibia with a 7.62 X 39. He claimed it did not actually hurt much, and that he was not aware he was a wounded Marine until about 3 hours later. He actaully thought he was hit in the leg by a piece of the ground that hit him after a round came in contact with the ground. There was an actual hole in his leg. He was very lucky because a couple of mm either way and he would probably have a fake leg from the knee down.

I have seen quite a few other people get shot, but I have never seen much of a reaction out of someone after a double tap or 3 round burst of 5.56.

My Dad was shot on 3 occasions, 2 times (flesh wounds) in Normandy and the big one, 3 rounds from a MG42, in the Battle of the Bulge. One of the rounds blew his femur to splinters. He described the sensation as like getting hit with a baseball bat, HARD.

Re: Have you ever been shot?

Purposely shot at by some psycho in the Los Padres National Forest in 1989. He drove up on a motorcycle, emptied two pistols at me from about 25 yards and rode off. I went flat behind a 1 foot berm (barely enough cover), got peppered with rocks and bullet fragments. Bought my first hand gun.

Homewood (Lake Tahoe), 1993, visiting friends and was the victim of a home invasion due to a case of mistaken identity (in a million dollar neighborhood). Two guys on drugs came through the front (locked) door claiming that we owed them money. Home invasion lasted about 40 minutes, had a gun to my head for about 10 of those minutes. My gun was in my duffle in the back of the house (a lot of good it did me), didnt sleep for three days.

Kettleman City 2008, stopped for gas while traveling on Interstate 5. Had my wife and two small boys (asleep) with me. While leaving the gas station parking lot, was approached (running towards our car) by a Mexican gang member with a pistol from the right rear. Immediately accelerated off of the X while simultaneously drawing my (illegal in Ka) CCW. I saw him approach the next closest car in my rear view mirror as we drove of. Checked the local papers on line the next day and learned that said gang member was being chased by rival gang members through the parking lot and was shot dead just seconds after we left the scene.

Two weeks later, Tonopah 2008, staying at one of two hotels in town I was awoken at 2 am by a drunken party in the hallway and room across from mine. Party consisted of 8-9 men and 4-5 women. After an hour, went down to front desk to ask for a different room. Night manager said he couldnt change my room because of the party so I told him that he could go talk to them. Ten minutes later, he comes up and tells the party goers that the guy in room 216 (thats me) has complained and that they need to be quiet. @#$%$#^&*$#@
In complete disgust, I go to the door to look out the peep hole and hear the party goers talking about how they should beat my ass. I draw my gun and wait. They start kicking my door. I quickly open door, take two steps back with gun drawn, no one says a word, they shit themselves, exit the property and never come back. Never did get back to sleep.

The moral of the story? Own a gun! Have that gun on or very near you (or it may as well be on the moon). You dont have to be in shitty places to come across shitty people. You will always be your (and your families) first line of defense. Getting shot at and having a gun stuck to your head in your own house sucks! Situational awareness is everything! And last but not least, lightning does strike more than once.

PS When people ask me why I always carry a gun, I look into their eyes and most of the time tell them that they just would not understand. Bx3

Re: Have you ever been shot?

When I was 8yo my dad came home with a used SG he'd just bought. He was always coming home with bartered longarms. Anyway, I remember plain as day standing about 10' in front of him and about 4' to his right as he racked the pump to chamber a shell with the gun at his hip which was about my chest level. Unbeknownst to him the firing pin was stuck such that the chambered shell was discharged as soon as the chamber was closed. My dad was basically standing in front of a kiddie pool in the yard which is why I was to his right because I was next to the pool. When the shot fired the pool erupted into a geyser sending water and pool liner well over my head and all over me. The concussive blast of the SG was a tangible and visceral pressure across my thorax.

All in all it was a very traumatic albeit harmless experience.

Pellet rifle wars were common in my neighborhood. Plenty of bruises and sometimes had to dig out a BB but we always played "no faces" as if that were a safety net. Good times. Paintball wasn't thought of then.

While in training for the police dept I am at now, we were doing "dummy" drills. Everyone was loading plastic fake orange bullets from a box, and after all 12 of us were all loaded up, the instructors told us to DOUBLE CHECK OUR MAGS because someone found a live round. Well, one guy didn't. 12 on the line doing dime drills, 5 instructors walking in front of us watching. All the sudden a live round pops off a few lanes over, luckily the instructor had JUST walked past, so it didn't hit anyone. Gave a damn good scare though.

I actually consider this forum a source of knowledge first and "entertainment" second. I asked the question because I've never experienced what many here have, and I figure that I can learn from what others have experienced in the past. Learning about the mistakes and accidents others have been through (and from reading the posts, a lot of people's experiences being shot involve mistakes or accidents) may keep similar mistakes/accidents from happening to me or my kids.

Shot myself in the foot with a pneumatic nail gun at work. I buried a 16d nail throught the top of my big toe, and it was just sticking out of the bottom of my foot. I actually pulled it out myself with a catspaw, and a pair of pliers! I had to use all of my strength to get it out! Never had goosebumps, and hair standing up like that before, or since. I went to Emergency after this. They did an Xray and the nail didn't hit any bones or tendons. Got a tetnus shot and went back to the job. I'll always remember the day it was, cause Magic Johnson was on t.v. saying that he had HIV. Long time ago! Had I let the Physician remove that nail, it would have cost me thousands I'm sure.

Good avenue of thought.

Long run it is a great idea to avoid wounds--guns; knives; words; dirty faces at fifty paces.

But if you have to---make sure the other side pays bigger than you did. And step on their neck when you are leaving. Not enough to do damage--just enough so they remember.

Never been shot, but I remember hearing Texas Gov. Connally (remember he was riding in the limo with JFK) talking about how it felt to get shot, he said it felt like someone hit him in the back real hard with a hammer and I think that was after the bullet had gone through JFK's head....ouch

I've never been hit with a bullet, but I've found myself in a few crossfire situations. Wrong place wrong time. Kind of scary. A friend that was shot had a 9mm bullet go through his chest. He said it felt like someone got a fire poker red hot and then stabbed it through his body.

Actually, I was talking to a friend about that very subject and neither one of us has been able to come to a conclusion on whether it has been bad or good luck. While I wouldn't want to repeat any of those events ever again, I am still walking the earth no worse for wear and just maybe a little smarter because of it.

I was once, but not like you think.

My sister shot me in the chin with a BB gun when we were teenagers. Dern thing stuck in my chin and hurt like the dickens, but the worst part was when my mom saw, and commenced to smashing my brand new BB gun rifle into as many pieces as she could. Now that really hurt.

Hope to never be shot by the real thing.....
